To use a cliche..
I saw Swades over the weekend and it is a movie with a difference. Idealistic but not over the top and believable solutions at the very grass root levels. In fact everyone i spoke with likes Lagaan better and I keep wondering why. After all Lagaan, as a movie, was an account of history (fiction at that) and was definitely a story of determination and grit and triumph of the spirit.
But Swades is a story for today and the future. It shows you that how a person, if he so desires, can make a difference, to at least some lives. Is that not the entire point? The movie has gotten a typical scoffing attitude from those who have not the courage to try and make a difference for those who go ahead and at least try.
