Got this via mail today and am still not sure whether it gave a feeling of vindication or just made me feel plain bad. Its not the common man's fault that his government is apathetic towards his distress. Mumbai still suffers from the aftermath of the deluge and needs much stronger action than just banning plastic bags.

But nevertheless, am quite Anti the man who loves to start wars.. so here it is.

inches of rain in new orleans due to hurricane katrina... 18
inches of rain in mumbai (July 27th).... 37.1

population of new orleans... 484,674
population of mumbai.... 12,622,500

deaths in new orleans within 48 hours of katrina...100
deaths in mumbai within 48hours of rain.. 37.

number of people to be evacuated in new orleans... entire city..
number of people evacuated in mumbai...10,000

Cases of shooting and violence in new orleans...Countless
Cases of shooting and violence in mumbai.. NONE

Time taken for US army to reach new orleans... 48 hours
Time taken for Indian army and navy to reach mumbai...12 hours

status 48hours later...new orleans is still waiting for relief, army and electricty
status 48hours later..mumbai is back on its feet and is business is as
usual

USA...world's most developed nation
India...JUST A DEVELOPING NATION..

PS I changed it slightly to remove the additional comments but have left in place some errors made. Some parts of Mumbai DID NOT have electricity till three to four days after the 26th of July.

I think it's a case of comparing apples and oranges. Sure the US govt has done an awful job of search and rescue, but as to bombay being up and about in 2 days, the problem with NO is its strange geography, being like a bowl with most of it being underneath sea level, with all the levees and everything, its difficult to get the water out. However, it IS true that after the floods, there were no gun-toting thugs wandering the streets of Bombay, raping and looting. So yeah, I guess in some aspects, Bombay DID manage to get it all together much better than NO did.

Which I feel is unfortunate for the ppl living in NO... its feels odd to compare two natural disasters and their recovery, just for upmanship. But then people did it even after 9/11..

I even came across a news pc that said that the govt did not respond as quickly with aid coz NO is primarily a black man's town.. a hideous thought and I hope its just useless conjecture...

It might be only conjecture, but the fact is, I doubt that the US govt would have wasted 5 days doing nothing if the people trapped in NO had been rich white CEOs of American companies.

I have some thoughts on the whole thing in case you are interested.

Well..New Orleans is i'm told by and large a poor city in the sense that it houses a lot of poor folk. And Mumbai is the financial capital of India. So see no surprise in this.

What is sad is that this reflects that everywhere in the world, the treatment of the poor is about the same.

Kudos kudos! I had commented on someone's post about the rapes, murders and lootings that make us a more humane nation and people. Cheers to us!!
