The weekend...
Like most weekends, this one too I caught some movies so here goes.
My Brother Nikhil - its a decent film, not as preachy as 'Phir Milenge' but definitely lacks theatrics ( a plus according to me).
One nuance that stands out more than the primary theme of the movie about creating awareness about AIDS and HIV, is how the film makers have handled relationships between two men. For once the entire connotation of a homosexual relationship is not based on sex alone. Two guys have been shown to develop a deeper bond than just sexual compatibility.
I don't know that many people who have same sex relationships. And those who I do know, I don't as well.
Its refreshing to see film makers treat it like any relationship between two people consisting of feelings, bonds, jealousy and even individual idiosyncracies. Its does not have any unneccessary vulgar innuendoes, no *nudge nudge wink wink*, no effiminate gestures, no garish outfits.
Just one guy who sees his love slowly wither away.
Of course the day audiences mature enough not to break into guffaws when a man breaks down seeing his love suffer, it can be said that cinema has truly come of age, here.

Speaking of cinema coming of age, Devrai (The Sacred Grove) - a Marathi film available in theatres with subtitles, made by Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukhtankar, is also a must watch.
In this day and age when we are still educating ourselves about AIDS and polio still needs to be eradicated, this film talks about schizophrenia and its need to create awareness so that it is not called "madness".
Of course Atul Kulkarni is also a reason enough to watch this film.
